Alan Blinder and "Predistribution"
Alan Blinder extolls the virtues of “predistribution” in promoting a better America, advocating for higher federal minimum wages and enacting antimonopsony policies to help low-income workers. Clearly, Mr. Blinder has not stepped out of the Ivory Tower in years. Higher minimum wages are being tried in California and are being met with disaster, with thousands of people already losing their jobs and thereby making zero dollars per hour. As for monopsonies, which he accurately defines as "a market condition in which there’s only one buyer," are we really to believe that there are low-skill workers who only have one potential employer? By its very definition, low-skill workers are non-specialized and can work virtually anywhere. The logic of monopsonies applies to people like doctors and surgeons, who have high skill but few employment options within a given area. The truth is that these policies, if enacted, will only enrich those who are already rich at the expense of those who are already struggling.
