Letter to the Editor (2)
Here’s another Letter to the Editor I sent to the NYTimes just last week. I confess, with the Trump inauguration and the everything else going on in President Biden’s final days, I should have just held on to this one and not sent it in.
Editor:
Having spent the last ten years in higher education, I saw first-hand that college is very expensive and that students are struggling with paying back their loans after graduation.
But the problem student have is not in getting a loan; it's in paying it back. Making funding more available would only exacerbate the high cost of tuition. Instead, we need to focus on making it easier for recent college grads to find gainful employment that allows them to more easily pay back their loans. This might include college, but it might also include allowing already existing federal funding programs to fund job training programs instead of only allowing them to pay for college.
Helping more people find better employment opportunities is the best way to solve the student debt crisis.
