I had a Letter appear in Friday’s WSJ. The idea of “reciprocal tariffs” is one that sounds far better than it actually is. Pundits have pointed out “well, if those other countries would just lower their tariffs, then we’d reciprocate by lowering ours, too!”
I have a better solution: just lower tariffs. Period, full stop.
If others do as well, great. If not, fine. But we need to stop putting Americans, workers and consumers, rich and poor (but especially the poor) in the crosshairs on a hope and a prayer that things will get better. They could just be better, right now, regardless of what other countries do.
